General Condition: Wilderness Freeway (Heavily used and/or well maintained)

Trail is mostly in beautiful conditions from the TH to Vicente Flats. There are a handful of short sections (3-10ft) that have some erosion and have been worked on by trail crews, and they are easily negotiated. The stream by Espinoza Camp is flowing quite well for August. Really refreshing to put your head in the little waterfall there. Lots of dragonflies in the open meadows for some reason. We saw a squirrel jump 20ft out of a tree onto a bush. Not quite a flying squirrel so much as a falling squirrel. None of the redwoods looked heat stressed. There were no strawberries and all the thimbleberries were dried up. Water was flowing in the creek upstream of Vicente Flats in the usual location.

General Condition: Clear (no obstacles and tread well defined)

Very well-defined trail, easy to follow single-track and mostly solid footing.
Some sections are a little bit overgrown with knee/waist-high brush (long pants recommended, but I didn't personally see any ticks), which is the only reason I wouldn't rate as "wilderness freeway", but no large downfalls or other obstacles.

Hiked up to Espinosa Camp on Friday morning (arriving around noon) and stayed there for the night. Lucky we got in when we did as multiple groups came by Friday evening/night after the two sites were already full. Continued to Vicente Flat on Saturday with all the other folks out for the holiday weekend. While it definitely wasn't empty on trail, we had no issues finding a spot to set up, just had to wander for a bit to find something private.

Water supply at the small stream crossing about .2 miles past Espinosa was running very well, while the creek through Vicente Camp had more dry spots than expected right at camp, however there is plenty of running water to find within a 5-minute walk either up or downstream from camp.
Some small annoying flies at both campsites, but only a few mosquitoes.

A perfect 2-night trip and great views on the way down Sunday after the fog cleared.

Very clear all the way. Recently maintained. No logs over trail; but could see where they had been cut away recently. Tread was very well-defined and cut into the slope. I was surprised the day after to visit this site and see that the upper section (below Vicente FLat) was only "yellow" on the map until now. I guess the trail crews did great work, because yesterday to me the trail was definitely "green". Many happy folks were on the trail, including a scout group and an American Conservation Experience trail crew camped at Vicente Flat whom we could see working across the valley on Stone Ridge Trail. Thanks trail crews!

General Condition: Passable (some brush and/or deadfalls, tread evident)

Nine VWA Volunteer Wilderness Rangers (VWRs) met at the Kirk Creek trailhead on Sunday, February 8th to blowout on the Kirk Creek Trail (about one mile in from Highway 1). They split into two groups with seven taking on the slide while the other two removed encroaching brush from other sections of the trail.

The seven volunteers on the slide removed vegetation and soil from the backslope which revealed some of the original tread. This enabled them to more than double the width of the footpath. A drain was dug upslope from the slide area to divert running water away from the trail to make their tread work last longer. (Nothing lasts forever in the Ventana except perhaps the earth, sea, and sky.)

After completing the tread repair, the seven VWRs joined their two compadres in brushing sections of the Kirk Creek Trail for the remainder of the day. What a great contribution by the VWRs!

I hiked from Highway 1 to Vincente Flat Camp.

The trail is in remarkably good condition, with a few notable exceptions.

There is a severe blowout at about 1.0 mile (35.99915, -121.49356), extending maybe 15-20' (I'm not good with estimates.). The tread at its narrowest is about 8", the drop-off maybe 40-50'. I didn't feel comfortable 'walking' across it, so I sort of shuffled, sliding one foot at a time. I wouldn't want to be the first person to walk across after a storm!

About 3/4 mile further (36.00346, -121.49609) there is another blowout waiting to happen (but perhaps the brush and tree can keep it in check for many more years?). You can see it if you look back from the opposite side of the canyon.

Don't know what can be done about either of these.

There are a several small blowdowns (and a few larger ones) in Hare canyon that look like they have been there a long time (and I think have already been reported). The next time I'm out, I'll pay attention to where they are and report their size and location. (There are several 4" limbs that are easy to step over and a 4' trunk that you have to scramble over.)

(Distances and coordinates are estimates)

Cheers,

Very clear and well-maintained trail! There was some brush and poison oak on sides of trails, but did not worry when hiking in shorts. The first 2.5 miles are especially beautiful and would be a great day hike (there are good snack/lunch spots overlooking the ocean). Good water at Vicente Flat is farther than we were expecting, there’s a trickle at the stream crossing 100 ft before the grassy camp which was usable in early December. However, there is TONS of water another 0.15 further up the trail. Saw almost no other hikers mid-week in December and had Vicente Flat to ourselves one night :)

Our backpacking route: our college outing club from NH sent a group of 10 on an incredible 2.5 days in the Cone Peak region. First day we hiked in to Vicente Flat Camp. Second day we bear hung all extra food/gear and took day packs (with plenty of water, because once you climb out of the Vicente Flat valley region Cone Peak is very dry). We then day-hiked Cone Peak via the rest of the Vicente Flat trail and then the Cone Peak trail (about 13 miles out-and-back). Day 3 morning we hiked back out to the car!

Continued the annual Memorial Day Weekend tradition of dads & kids at VF. Now that Naci Ferg was open there were many more people up there than the past 3 years. Still, plenty of room. Trail is in Epic condition all the way to Cone Peak. As always we had a crew of 3 snipping with Fiskars extendable pruning shears. Just imagine if everyone hiked Big Sur while snip-snipping here and there... It's so easy and just from us we more or less knocked down all the thistle and PO face grabbers. Should be mandatory equipment hiking in Big Sur. We also opened up the tunnels a bit on the last stretch of Cone Peak

I went in on the 23rd, stayed at Vicente Flat the nights of the 23rd and 24th, and exited back to Hwy 1 on the 25th.

"Heavily used and well-maintained" certainly fits, although this is wild Big Sur, not a manicured park. Mainly in the 1/2 mile or so northeast of Espinosa Camp, there are a few small issues: some minor trail slumping; a few places were some strands of PO, gooseberry, ceanothus, etc. need to be nudged away; one spot where a small washout requires a few larger than normal steps over some rocks; two trivial step-overs. None of this is going to slow anybody down for long.

Vicente Flat Camp was its usual busy self, but let me offer a gentle complaint. There's an awful lot of campsite construction, some of which would be too much in a front country campground, much less 5 miles back into the wilds. Probably worst is the area right at the base of that glorious 15-20 foot diameter redwood shortly after one descends into the area and before the Hare Creek crossing. Oversized fire ring rather too close to the base of the tree. Big sitting longs, one of which butts up against the tree. Other debris scattered about. I like and use established campsites, but if I had been out with a group rather than hiking solo, I'd have done some deconstruction here.

Wow, I've hiked this trail for 20 years, this is the best condition I've ever seen it in!!! There are a few sections where minor slipouts or drainage etc. have narrowed it slightly but it is 90% in almost perfect condition.

Our Cone Peak trip overlapped with a Forest Service crew who worked their way down over a few days from Cone Peak Road on Vicente Flat trail, the Vicente Flat campsite, and the Kirk Creek trail. When we came down the Kirk Creek trail on 9/12, they'd cut back some vegetation and evened out some spots, leaving this trail in great condition. No fallen trees or encroaching poison oak at this time on Kirk Creek.
