FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

#UPDATE#

FULL CLOSURE ON HWY. 1 NORTH OF RAGGED POINT BEGINS SUNDAY

MONTEREY COUNTY – Hwy. 1 will be fully closed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week beginning Sunday, Jan, 24 @ 5 pm for 2-3 weeks due to roadway erosion. This closure will be in effect nine miles north of Ragged Point Inn or three miles south of Gorda, which is seven miles north of the San Luis Obispo County line.

This closure is necessary to bring in a large crane after a section of fill was washed out by the surf due to recent heavy rains.

Hwy. 1 will re-open upon completion of this $2 million emergency repair, which will be performed by Windsor/Specialty Contractors.

Businesses remain open and Big Sur will be accessible from the north.

I just spoke to the captain from Nacimiento Station and he states the Cone Peak Road is now open.

This is subject to change, of course, if we get more storms.

On Friday (Oct 16) the road was cleared of obstacles but remains closed because of the threat of more rain to come.

I do not know whether or not it will be reopened this year. As Kate says, check before you go. The District office number is (831) 385-5434.

It is often closed for the winter, so make sure and check before you head out there.

Cone Peak Road WAS in fine condition as of Sunday but the Forest Service has closed the road due to the storm. No doubt there will be trees down along it given these winds. Check with the Forest Service to learn when it will be re-opened.

Yes, great condition as of Oct. 3rd. Just graded and prepared for the winter. We will see how the road fairs in the rain.

went up there 2-3 weeks ago, great condition, no problems anywhere. it seemed like they smoothed it out, probably having so much fire gear up there.
