Big Sur River crossing reports

Post by jack_glendening »

Having some idea of what Big Sur River crossings will be like is important when planning or setting out on a trek where they will be required. Experienced Ventana hikers know about the monitoring gauge on the river, but I know of nothing publlc which compares those gauge readings vs. actual crossing experiences.

So I decided to gather actual reports, compare to gauge readings, and put that comparison on the web in a place easily found on my Big Sur Trailmap home page (in the "Status" section under the "River heights high" alert, which automatically appears when gauge readings exceed 100 cfs). Such info is especially important now that the new Pine Ridge Trail slide forces hikers to cross the river at Barlow Camp when headed further into the backcountry.

So far I've gathered data from a few VWA reports and will continue to monitor those. I'd like to encourage others to report their crossing experiences in the future either via the VWA, in a Trail Report, or on my Big Sur Trailmap forum, or directly by email. I think the hiking community will greatly benefit by having some actual comparisons to consider when thinking about a hike, rather than vague warnings as from the USFS that crossings 'may be impassable during high waters' which is certainly true but no help in planning.
