Beautiful Saturday morning with warm temperatures on the ridges. The canyon was cool and beautiful. I saw a fish in the creek and lots of flowers. We climbed the Alvin trail which was in fantastic shape, and we even encountered a rattle snake just before reaching the junction of Twitchell Road/Elevator. My daughter almost stepped on him as he was camouflaged with a dusty brown color. He did not appear to be bothered by us, and it took a little coaxing to get him to move off of the narrow trail.

We followed Twitchell up to the upper crossing of Limekiln creek at a spot that I call the "enchanted forest". The area is covered with clovers, and the cluster of redwoods makes for a very beautiful lunch spot. Prior to the creek crossing, someone has cut the two trees that were there the last time I hiked up Stone Ridge in January. Thank you for the trail work, as it was rather difficult to climb up and over the rather large trees and now it is easy to squeeze through.

We opted to turn around at the upper creek crossing as it was a warm day and the climb up the ridge would have been hot and difficult

LimeKiln is now open for day use only! Good water flows on a fantastic day in a magical place. Warnings signs at Hare Canyon and the middle fork waterfall trail but open to the kiln with a bridge repair in process. The Twichell Elevator connection to Twin Peak seemed to be in good shape, at least initially. There were few visitors, and the $10 entrance fee was worth it in solitude.

All of the trails in Limekiln State Park are officially closed. The hazards are primarily due to remnant flood deposits. These consist of snags of large tree trunks, branches and rocky material. There are also recent tree falls and some standing trees that appear to be in precarious positions. There are small washouts of the trails in a few places. The bridge below the falls, at the confluence of the Kiln and Falls branches of the creek was destroyed. Overall, the condition of the forest near the campground appears very good, with little actual burn damage, but the secondary effects of the flooding seem to have triggered the closures.
