Re: Backpacking suggestion

Ah, good point, South Ventana Cone did not burn. White Cone & Black Cone did though, as did the southern 2/3 of the BCT. Here's a kmz file of 2016 CA fire perimeters; helpful to compare it with Jack's Big Sur Trail Map in Google Earth...

Re: Backpacking suggestion

South Ventana Cone, "White Cone" (Peak 4,721, aka "the Elephant's Hump") & Black Cone are all easy to summit (cross-country) from the Black Cone Trail IF the brush is minimal. In that regard, the Soberanes Wildland Fire did you a big favor. For a sneak preview, check out- htt...

Re: Volunteers and ACE work on the Pine Ridge Trail

"Dmitry" posted the following in the Pine Ridge Trail conditions reports (http://www.ventanawild.org/forums/ventana-wilderness-trails/263 - hiked 12/20/17) "I started where the Big Sur Trail connects to the Pine Ridge trail and going up was pretty easy, grass only knee high. The tread...

Re: Stone Ridge vs Double Cone for 2 day, 1 night backpack t

Agree, VDC is simply too remote to be reasonable as a 2 day, 1 night outing, especially with the addition of many road miles before you can even get to the trailhead. Kirk Creek>Stone Ridge>CP Rd>Vicente Flat>Kirk Creek could work, but that's substantial mileage & major elevation gain/loss. Also...

Re: Backpacking suggestion

Be forewarned that almost ANY loop will involve some bad (at least very brushy) stretches of trail. The Vicente Flat/Cone Peak area loop proposed below would be much less so, but on any given weekend it will be very crowded & I wouldn't count on finding an unoccupied flat spot at tiny (seriously...

Re: Cone Peak Road Gate?

There's plenty parking in a turnout next to the gate. Just don't block the road & you'll be fine.

Re: Request for bush-mallow observations

Keir, Nice to see you here & thanks for taking on this important project. I've already uploaded all the Malacothamnus observations I can recall to iNaturalist, but am always on the alert for other occurrences. Feel free to reach out if any of the data/observations warrant further explanations or...
