As of July 4, 2018, Fire Restrictions have been increased in the Los Padres National Forest which includes the Ventana and Silver Peak Wilderness Areas. The scuttlebutt is that it'll be any day now; Forest Orders (e.g., elevated Fire Restrictions) need to pass muster with the agency's legal folks, which can slow things down. To clarify, from Pine Ridge south to Strawberry Valley, there really is no alternate or parallel route; the Black Cone Trail is the only reasonably sane way to go. South Ventana Cone, White Cone &/or Black Cone could be visited along the way, but you'd be well advised to drop your pack & do ...
