Bryan-- I would not recommend a belay for water crossing under any circumstances. In swift current it would be nearly impossible to bring a fallen hiker back to the shore. A belay is just as likely to pin a hiker under water as to pull him clear, and a snag- of the line could prevent moving downstre...
