Re: San Carpóforo Trail (aka Spruce Creek, Dutra Flats)
Date Hiked: November 19, 2022 General Condition: Passable (some brush and/or deadfalls, tread evident) Was pleasantly surprised to find the water trough at Dutra Flat Camp full of clear water with a trickle from the pipe. The attempt to patch the rusted bottom of the trough during the dry summer mo...

Re: San Carpóforo Trail (aka Spruce Creek, Dutra Flats)
Date Hiked: May 15, 2022 General Condition: Clear (no obstacles and tread well defined) Remember when Dutra Flat had a spring-fed trough that stayed full of clear water most years? Those days are gone. On April 9 I messed around with the spring trying to find what was plugging it and managed to get...

Dutra Flat Spring
The pipe feeding the trough at Dutra Flat dried up last summer and is still not flowing although creeks are flowing and the ground is saturated nearby. Once years ago I followed the pipe up the hill looking for a spring or spring box and never found one. Does anybody know where the water at Dutra Fl...

Re: San Carpóforo Trail (aka Spruce Creek, Dutra Flats)
Date Hiked: January 22, 2022 General Condition: Passable (some brush and/or deadfalls, tread evident) Dutra Flat spring is not flowing - trough is empty. The creek next to the camp is running with useable water. The trail east of Dutra Flat is better than it's been. You follow one of a dozen cow pa...

Re: Backcountry suggestion?
I'm not that familiar with the Ventana Wilderness, but most of the Condor Trail route is really rough faint trails. Puerto Suelo is awful. Black Cone and Lost Valley are no joke. In the Silver Peak Wilderness the Willow Creek Trail is rough. Trails over Silver Peak including Soda Wild Trail are a ch...

Re: Long Thru Hike
I agree with what others have said about water and trail conditions. But you've also got a really long road walk on the South Coast Ridge Rd. More info for your research - http://www.condortrail.com/ The Condor Trail (which is actually more of a concept than a trail) passes through a lot of that. Th...

Re: Bear Sighting by Pelon Camp (Lost Valley Trail)
Cool post on hikelospadres.com this week of a bear sighting at Dutra Flat 6/30.

I was at that table watching it get dark on Saturday but didn't see a bear. Never seen good bear sign there either.

Re: Bear Sighting by Pelon Camp (Lost Valley Trail)
The only bear I've seen in the northern Los Padres was on South Coast Ridge Rd south of Lottie Potrero in November 2018. He was quite large, black, looked startled and bounded down the west-facing slope into the Silver Peak Wilderness. I never saw bear scat when I started hiking here in 2008, but no...

Re: Salmon Creek Trail
Date Hiked: March 8, 2020 General Condition: Wilderness Freeway (Heavily used and well maintained) I cleared most of the mess below Estrella Camp. Six trees came down across the trail from a landslide above. I was able to remove all the small stuff and clear the tread so you can walk upright on the...
