Status of Trees on Naciemento Fergusen

by rothmana » Mon Feb 14, 2022 1:24 pm

Hello,

I camped at Ponderosa Camp over the weekend, and drove up to Memorial camp for a day hike on Arroyo Seco trail.

The trees going east on Naciemento Fergusen towards Fort Hunter Liggett were in various states; most without leaves, many with clusters of leaves in odd places that looked more like nests...my traveling companion noted that these are probably a type of Deciduous Oak Trees...I hope this is true. They appeared majestic and somewhat injured- perhaps from fire, drought or bark beetle.

Can someone with knowledge of the local ecology share their thoughts on the status of oak trees in the area East of Ponderosa camp and South of Santa Lucia Memorial- essentially the Fort/Mission area? Much appreciation in advance.
