Tamarisk Infestations In The Ventana?

by Duane » Tue Nov 11, 2008 11:17 pm

I recently participated in a trip to help flag and remove tamarisk plants along the Sisquoc River. During the spring, we found several dozen tree-sized plants near the Manzana Schoolhouse, which we had to dig out by hand so they wouldn't resprout. On this latest trip, we explored the upper Sisquoc (upstream from Sycamore Camp), but found only small plants, about 1-3 feet tall.

Here's a photo of what it looks like (in its small incarnation):

Has tamarisk been a problem along Ventana streambeds?

(For those who may not know, Tamarisk displaces cottonwoods and other riparian plants naturally adapted to the local conditions).
