VWA Trail Crew Email List
Members of the public interested in volunteer stewardship of the trails within the Ventana and Silver Peak Wilderness Areas are invited to join a private, yet unmoderated, environment where issues, questions, comments, ideas, and procedures pertaining to trail work, trail conditions, tools, techniques, and anything else relating to trail work in the Ventana and Silver Peak Wilderness Areas of the Los Padres National Forest are discussed in a forum setting via email. It is oriented towards those who are actively involved with these issues, but everyone with an interest is welcome and encouraged to sign up.
To join the list just
visit the Trailcrew list sign-up page, but please read the rest of this page first for important information and direction.
For further information or assistance with this list, please send a message to the listkeeper, Dave Knapp, at daveknapp@ventanawild.org.
Once you've subscribed to the list the commands are simple:
To post a message to the list, send your message to:
trailcrew@ventanawild.net
A reminder is sent out once a month concerning your Trailcrew list membership.
The URL link in the reminder will take you to a web page where you may
change your membership status or configuration, including unsubscribing,
setting digest-style delivery or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation).
How a mail list works.
After subscribing to a list, you send e-mail to the list's primary address and every other subscriber receives your message. One or more other subscribers may then respond to your question or comment and discussion will ensue. Every subscriber then becomes a participant in or observer of this public conversation. Of course, there may be more than one conversation taking place at any given time, especially if the list is large. For this reason, when you reply to another subscriber's post, it's best to include the relevant part of his or hers original message (but not the entire message unless it's necessary). Including this text is up to your discretion, but most people tend to do so, since it makes discussion easier to follow. It's also very important to use clear subject line descriptions every time you post a message. This way, your fellow subscribers can easily scan their in-boxes for messages of interest. The subject line of all postings will also be automatically prefixed with the word "[trailcrew]" by the list server, making messages from the list easy to identify at a glance.
To avoid duplicating information, we ask that "alerts" and information disseminated by other mail lists, not be posted or forwarded to this mail list unless germane to its subject.
If you have any questions or need any assistance, please contact Dave Knapp at daveknapp@ventanawild.org.
Trailcrew Discussion List FAQ
-
Which topics are suitable for posting to the VWA Trail Crew
Discussion List?
-
Issues, questions, comments, ideas, and procedures pertaining to
trail work, trail conditions, tools, techniques, and anything else
relating to trail work in the Ventana and Silver Peak Wilderness Areas.
Trail work related to other Wilderness Areas and National Forest lands
that have a significant relationship to local issues are acceptable. For
example, crosscut saw techniques in a pacific northwest old-growth
forest issue would be an acceptable topic on the VWA Trail Crew
Discussion List.
-
As the range of suitable topics is narrow, if your post could be
interpreted as an inappropriate topic for the discussion list, please
forward a copy - prior to posting - to the discussion list administrator
for review.
-
If you believe that a post to the mail list violates this FAQ, please notify the mail list administrator of your concerns, not the party that posted the message.
-
There is an abundance of other environmental and volunteer oriented
mail lists available for those who wish to keep informed of a broad
range of topics that are beyond the scope of the Trail Crew Discussion List.
-
Personal attacks, profanity, and vulgarity will not be tolerated. Violation of this policy will result in the immediate termination of your Trailcrew mail list subscription.
-
Is it okay to post forwarded messages?
-
Forwarded messages may be posted IF they are on topic (see above) and they have been re-formatted to eliminate any quotation markings and jumbled sentences or paragraphs. Also, please ensure that the mail list is the only recipient in any of the address headers. Forwards should not be CC'ed to the mail list.
-
Good netiquette also suggests that the person forwarding a message to a mailing list should include a paragraph in their own words at the top of the forwarded message detailing how the message is germane to the subject of the mailing list.
-
When should I reply to the mail list and when to the poster of a
message?
-
The default is currently set to send replies to the sender of the
message. To share your reply with the rest of the discussion list
subscribers, use the "reply all" function of your email program or
change the address header to trailcrew@ventanawild.net. RSVPs and
messages directed to a specific individual should be addressed to ONLY
that person, NOT to the discussion list.
-
Why am I no longer receiving postings from the mail list?
-
The most frequent cause is that you have changed your e-mail address. Your e-mail address is "on file" with the mail list server and it has no way of knowing that it has been changed. Please let me know of any changes in advance so your list mail won't be interrupted.
-
Is a daily mail list digest available?
-
Yes, a mail list digest is compiled each day, combining all messages to the mail list for the day into a single message. This message is then sent to subscribers each day after midnight. If you prefer to receive your mail list messages in this manner, please send a request to the e-mail address below, not the mail list.
