Jan 21-22 Vicente Flat Logging Trip

Date: Jan 21-22 2007
Trail: Vicente Flat Trail
Volunteers: 11
Volunteer Hours: 133

12 stalwart backpackers met near Kirk Creek Campground on January 21st as part of the Cone Peak Gradient Project. Our goal was to clear the trail of as many of the downed trees across the trail as we could. A recent storm apparently tossed about 15 trees down, and there were already a number of trees blocking the trail, so we knew we had our work cut out for us. Sawyers Mike Heard, Robert Parks, Mark Maslow, and David Knapp were able to coordinate the cutting up of 11 of those trees, over a two day period.

The relatively small number of logs cut for the large crew size reflects the difficulty of the logs, which had to be cut into as many as five pieces in order to remove them from the trail. Seventeen smaller logs that are only minor impediments to hikers were left behind to be taken care of by future trips. In addition, we were able to brush and repair tread that had been damaged by the fallen trees.
