Six members of the VWA Trail Crew spent a beautiful fall Sunday on the lower portion of the Buckeye Trail between Soda Springs junction and Buckeye Flat. We reworked the trail tread where it had slipped out in five places, cut back some brush, and cleaned out water bars. Joining us this day was Jayson Mellom, staff photographer from the San Luis Obispo Tribune newspaper. Jayson needed some photographs to go along with a feature piece by Tribune environmental reporter David Sneed titled "So Many Acres, So Little Money," in which he delves into the monumental challenge that the U.S. Forest Service faces in keeping the trails of the Ventana and Silver Peak Wilderness passable with little or no budget. Volunteers, of course, figure prominently in the solution, and the all-volunteer VWA Trail Crew was honored to have Jayson join us.
Below are a few photographs taken during the course of the day, hopefully showing how much fun the VWA Trail Crew has while also doing good work.
