May 5-7 Carrizo Trail Trip
Faithful readers, 5 stalwart explorers: David Knapp, Betsy MacGowan, Dave Nelson, Esperanza Hernandez and new guy Wayne Aune made their way to the Carrizo trail to do some logging of the Historic Carrizo trail as only the VWA can! Over the course of 3 days, we cleared 18 trees off the trail, 12 of which were over 12 inches in diameter, and of those 12, 5 were over 25 inches in diameter. There are still a number of step overs left on the trail, including one climb over, and one minor trail reroute that needs to be removed. At least one more trip will be required to really clean up this trail. This trail is noteworthy in that after this logging trip, the first mile is quite clear and in really good shape. Next on the agenda for this trail would be another logging trip, in combination or in addition to a treadwork trip. Our special treats potluck included ham, cheese, crackers, salami, and Betsy Pie! Also, Esperanza treated us all to her famous chicken verde burritos - spicy! We also enjoyed cold beer and fine whiskey. Our last noteworthy accomplishment was packing out the trash that was above the spring. About 20 pounds of crap. In the future, if you are thinking about leaving trash where people can see it - don't. We'll just pack it out. And since this was a sawing trip, we were already carrying an 8 pound saw, a secondary one man saw, an axe, and wedges. The additonal weight was ,um, unwelcome at best. It is my sincere hope that education is the key to preventing this kind of event from happening in the future. dbk
