There was one nasty slide about ½ mile from Old Coast Road, and approximately 20 bad slumps in the tread between the National Forest boundary and the point where the trail begins a gentle descent towards the spur to Pico Blanco Public Camp. There were also numerous downed trees, mostly between Old Coast Road and the point where the trail crosses the Little Sur River. The tree problem is mostly gone, at least as far as hikers are concerned, although a little more cutting could be done. Of the 20 slumps there were 9 that would require at least four people working more than half an hour to fix. We fixed 3 1/2 of those and several of the easier ones.
Fixing the tread at the slide is hopeless. We improved it enough so it is passable for hikers this season but it won't last. This 50' section is a portage for all but advanced backpackers due to a steep descent and climb. There are two alternative re-routes. One is to switch-back and cross above the slide and the other is to pass the slide by crossing the river. The latter is preferred, but since the trail lies on an easement over private land it is not clear whether that would be legally permissible. Forest Service guidance on this point is required.
Travel hours stated above refers to time spent hiking between vehicles and camp and between camp and the worksites. Most of the labor hours were spent on brushing and tread repair, with a lesser number (approximately 24) spent on deadfall removal.
