On March 11, seven members of the VWA Trail Crew headed out for five days on the picturesque Black Cone Trail deep in the Ventana Wilderness. This was the first of three trips planned for spring 2005, with more to come later in the year. The crew base-camped at Mosquito Saddle at about 4,500' on the main ridge dividing the Big Sur River from Tassajara Creek, and were treated to some incredible displays of meteorology as the marine layer rose to within a few hundred vertical feet of their camp. While the rest of Monterey County was suffering dreary skies, those lucky enough to be out on the BCT were basking in balmy sunshine. The days were sunny and warm with a light cooling breeze - perfect for working trail. The nights were still and quiet.
Below are a few photographs taken during this particular trip, hopefully showing how much fun the VWA Trail Crew has while also doing good work. If this looks like the sort of thing you'd enjoy taking part in, there will be more expedition-length trips coming up later this year and we would love to have your company.
