Over the 4 day period of March 10 through March 13, 2003, four members of the VWA Trail Crew had a fun and productive time working on the Marble Peak Trail and South Fork Trail between Willow Springs Camp and Strawberry Valley Camp. We backpacked the 7.5 picturesque miles in to spacious Willow Springs Camp for the first night out from Arroyo Seco, then the next day worked our way the 4.5 miles to Strawberry, spending all day cutting out brush and tree limbs that were overhanging the trail and encroaching into the corridor from the sides. The second night we camped at delightful Strawberry Valley Camp, then worked our way back to Willow the following day taking care of the places that we didn't have time for the day before. The final day we packed up and hiked the 7.5 miles back to the trailhead, pausing as necessary along the way to pick up and pack out any litter we could find trailside or in the several campsites through which the Marble Peak Trail passes.
Thanks to the hard work of Monterey District Wilderness and Trails Manager Patrick Bailey, his dedicated mounted volunteers, and the volunteer VWA Trail Crew, as of March 13, 2003, a 6' rider on a 16hh horse would be able ride all the way from Arroyo Seco to Strawberry Valley without ever getting out of the saddle or bending over to avoid low overhanging branches. For backpackers, the trail is a dream. Of course conditions can change as new storms come through and move things around a bit. Some work is still needed on the post-fire regrowth encroaching from the sides of the trail, which will be the focus of upcoming VWA Trail Crew outings. It's a lot of fun and incredibly satisfying to work with like-minded folks on backcountry trails, relaxing in the evening around a crackling campfire and discussing everything under the sun (and moon). Come on out and join us.
