KEEP BIG SUR WILD! PUBLIC MEETING ON JUNE 18TH!

Join Rep. Sam Farr for a Public Meeting on the Big Sur Forest Service Management Unit Act. It’s the perfect opportunity to come out and show your support for public lands in the morning, then take the afternoon to go on a hiking adventure of your own in the Ventana Wilderness.

If you love the Ventana Wilderness & northern Los Padres National Forest, please come out for this Public Meeting on the Big Sur Forest Service Management Unit Act. This historic legislation, formerly HR 4040, would provide protection for public lands and rivers that the VWA has been advocating for for many years. Please come out to learn more about the bill, participate in the democratic process and to thank Rep. Sam Farr for all of his hard work.

In November of 2009, Rep. Sam Farr (D-Carmel) introduced The "Big Sur Forest Service Management Unit Act", to the United States House of Representatives. This comprehensive bill would improve the management of the Los Padres National Forests Monterey Ranger District in numerous ways including greater autonomy and budget authority for its 325,000 acres, permanent protection for over 90 miles of pristine rivers and streams through federal Wild & Scenic designation, enhanced fire management protection, and over 2,000 additional acres of national wilderness.

We need your help! Please help us build public support and submit a letter to Rep. Farr thanking him for being an advocate for wild places and asking him to reintroduce this crucial legislation.

Converting the 325,000 acres of the Monterey Ranger District into the Big Sur Management Unit (BSMU) will provide the region with the autonomy and budget authority this spectacular public land deserves. Furthermore, Sec 104, which designates the BSMU as a Wildland Urban Interface Special Study Area and directs the United States Forest Service to develop and annually update a fire management plan specifically for the BSMU, will ensure this region’s specific fire protection needs are met and further protect its wild public resources. Additionally, designation of over 90 miles of the most biologically and culturally sensitive rivers and streams as federal Wild & Scenic Rivers, including portions of the Arroyo Seco, San Antonio and Carmel Rivers, Big Creek and San Carpoforo Creek, will protect the Big Sur region’s heritage of free-flowing rivers for future generations. I support all aspects of HR 4040, including the wilderness area adjustments, the Jeff Norman Botanical Area, and the Arroyo Seco-Indians National Recreation Trail which will ensure mountain bikers, equestrians and hikers can continue to recreate on this trail.
	Please ask for an expedited hearing on your bill before the House Natural Resources Committee. We appreciate your ongoing work to protect California’s wild places and especially the breathtaking Central Coast region. Thank you,
