Historic Maps
PART IV:
Maps from the Land Case Map Collection at U.C. Berkeley

by Phil Williamson

The Land Case Map Collection is a collection of some 1,450 map manuscripts placed on permanent deposit by the U.S. District Court, San Francisco, in the Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley as part of the library's Online Archive of California. The maps in the collection depict land grants (ranchos) in California, and were presented in evidence to the District Court in property-rights cases subsequent to the American acquisition of California.

This is the fourth article in the Hisitoric Maps Series. Earlier Historic Maps articles were published in the Fall 2004, Fall 2001, and Spring 2000 issues of the Double Cone Quarterly (now the Double Cone Register).

Diseño del Rancho San Miguelito [1841?]

This diseño depicts the Rancho San Miguelito (now part of Fort Hunter Liggett). The ranch house is shown at or near the site of the current San Miguelito ranch - near the confluence of Stony Creek, which flows south from Stony Valley at the north (bottom) side of the map, and the Nacimiento River, flowing along the south (top) side. This diseño rises to the level of folk art - note the bear and other animals.
