It looks like the Pine Ridge Trail is closed along its entirety. That's a real bummer because this prevents hiking to Pine Valley from China Camp. I don't really understand why the Pine Ridge Trail is closed between China Camp and the Carmel River Trail.

I have read the official order and have been reading the various trail reports by some of the trail surveyors. It is my understanding there is a section between Terrace Creek and Barlow Flat where the trail is non-existent on the Pine Ridge trail. I have not read anywhere about dangerous trail conditions near Redwood Camp or Sykes Camp, so I am confused why those areas are off limits through November 2018 according to the order. I have been waiting for the other side of the Pine Ridge trail to be open from China Camp down to Redwood Camp and/or Sykes Camp, but now this is still too dangerous? For several years (before the fire) the Big Sur trail from Cienega Camp to Rainbow Camp was in horrible shape, but was never closed, yet after the fire, that trail is OK now? I am hoping someone can give details about the trail conditions on the Pine Ridge trail around Redwood Camp to Sykes that would explain why these sections are closed till 2018.

FOREST CLOSURE REDUCED!

Postby mikesplain on Tue Nov 07, 2017 4:48 pm

At last! The Los Padres National Forest has finally reduced the Soberanes fire closure order. Most of the Ventana Wilderness is now open, although the western Pine Ridge Trail, Terrace Creek Trail & spurs remain closed (see attached map). Have fun out there, but be safe & remember that we are still in Level 3 Fires Restrictions- NO CAMPFIRES in the backcountry. Happy trails!

The official order can be viewed at- https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/lpnf/new ... EPRD563663

In a normal year, we'd all be preparing for hiking season & the VWA keeps getting requests for such information. HOWEVER, please note that this is not a normal year & that due to the Soberanes Fire the entire Los Padres National Forest Monterey Ranger District is CLOSED until further notice. In the past, such closure orders have lasted well into spring, so please plan accordingly. In other words, don't plan on hiking in the Ventana Wilderness until at least spring of 2017. See http://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/lpnf/aler ... ?aid=36366 for more details.

IMPORTANT! FOREST CLOSURE

Postby mikesplain on Fri Sep 02, 2016 3:55 pm

As of today, Friday, September 2nd, the entire Monterey Ranger District is CLOSED. Plan your adventures somewhere other than the Big Sur backcountry until further notice. Here is the closure map & official order-
