I confirmed with Tassajara that hikers have a right of passage to the Tony Trail. The center is closed for the winter for a retreat, and it is possible that someone at the retreat was confused about this. But residents are being reminded of the policy.

Additionally the access to the Horsepasture Trail located about a mile up Tassajara Road from Tassajara is available to anyone. So Dmitry should have been able to hike out to Arroyo Seco.

Don't listen to the paramour !

He is not a registered VWA expert like us, he is an interloper not to be trusted.

Unite ! Defend ! We should demand an apology from the Imperious Monks, one of our own, Dmitry, a registered VWA-forum-user has been unjustly, unceremoniously, denied access his rights ! Maybe it was because of the color of his skin, or maybe it was because of his funny accent. This is crap, damn the unfeeling, unjust, selfish cloistered Monks. We have rights !

Damn them !

Let's stop with all the drama and sensationalism on this topic.

The simple fact of the matter is that the Tassajara Zen Center is a privately owned parcel of land that happens to be surrounded by public land. By law there has to be an easement providing unrestricted, legal public access through Zen Center property, in particular for people who require through access to the Tony Trail (if coming from the north) or Tassajara Road (if coming from the south).

As Rob eloquently articulates --- if it's necessary to pass through the Zen Center during their "cloistered" season you would be best to do so as quietly and inconspicuously as possible. The monks cannot legally inhibit your ability to pass BUT they do have the right to mandate what you can or cannot do while being on their property.

I do agree that more informative information regarding this issue of public access through Zen Center property should be made available on public websites (such as USFS and VWA Trail Forums) if only to mitigate unnecessary confusion.

The forest service sanctioned website does not mention any limitations about when the Tony Trail can be accessed and neither does this one. It seems like the trailhead should be open all year round. If it is not then the VWA should advise people of the dates of operation. This website is attempting to provide guidance and this is a major obtacle if you are planning a hike similar to that of Dmitry.

"The Tony Trail is a 2.63 mile trail in the Ventana Wilderness in Monterey County . Starting at Tassarajara Hot Springs the trail climbs up to the Marble Peak Trail (4E07)
Trail Details
Trail #: 4E06

Re-reading Dmitry's post, I would be hesitant to use the Zen Center as a "trailhead" this time of year. If planning on going the other direction and out to Arroyo Seco, you could use Horse Pasture Trail to Marble Peak Trail instead. Done that too, though not recently.

Brethren Unite !

The imperious Monks are illegally blocking access to the Tony Trail. This is a call to arms, they cannot be allowed to take away access from the public!

I recommend we grab all the pitchforks, maces, and baseball bats that we can muster and march onto the grounds. Get up Stand up ! This is an outrage !

or
lets advise them that they could be more helpful by posting signs to the Tony Trail. That thing can be difficult to find.

There is actually an official USFS right of way for hikers to cross the Tassajara Zen Center on your way back to your car on Tassajara Road; I've done it several times. But this time of year the center is closed and "cloistered" -- just move along at a steady pace, and don't stop until you get to the road. Don't talk to anyone, don't loiter, just hike on through.

Re: Imperious Tassajara Monks ?

Postby Dmitry on Wed Jan 03, 2018 5:25 pm

Thanks, Alladin, it's a pretty good question. Some man was out for a jog just as I approached the Tassajara Zen Center gate and he told me that he was a resident, and the Center was closed for the winter, and a no-go beyond that point. I specifically asked about the trails on the other side of their property, and he said that I couldn't pass. If a right of way exists, it's probably year round, and not dependent on their schedule.

Sounds like Dmitry got the shaft when trying to hike back to his car over the Tony trail.
Those low-life Monks gave him the run-around. Can you guys advise on whether there is or is-not a right-of-way for hiking through the Tassajara Zen Center ? That whole vow-of-silence thing sounds like crap to me.

Dimitry - Great to see your trail reports on the Pine-Ridge and Big Sur trails. Sound like you had a great trip. I like to think it is not really a great trip unless there are moments of doubt about whether you are actually going to be able to complete the trip.
