Hi Jack. I am happy to hear of your hike to Vado....a campground that has been out of reach for hikers of all ages and genorations. I can't wait to take a hike back there and visit a campground I've heard about for dacades. I thank you. Jeff

The map below shows the current route from Launtz Creek Camp to Vado Camp. The sections are distinguished by colors as (north to south)

Orange = orange flagged tread
Red = unflagged estimate of lost tread
Yellow = bypass around dense ceanothus
Orange = orange flagged tread
Red = unflagged estimate of lost tread
Magenta = pink flagged estimate of lost tread
Orange = orange flagged tread
Blue = creekwalk
Orange = orange flagged tread
Blue = creekwalk

A GPX file of this route can be obtained at http://bigsurtrailmap.net/TRAILS/MtManu ... -Route.gpx
(where colors are specified as Garmin extensions, with "Dark Yellow" replacing Orange).

The currently cleared and flagged route from Little Sur Trail to Launtz Creek Camp is shown as orange "Launtz Ridge Usetrail" and "Launtz Creek Camp Usetrail" on my Big Sur Trailmap website [http://bigsurtrailmap.net] - the connection between them, roughly along a contour, is currently unflagged.

FYI on our return trip, when we were doing less searching and so moving faster, though still taking some time to put up flags, it took us 90 minutes to go from Vado Camp to Launtz Creek Camp and then another 90 minutes to reach the Little Sur Trail.

Vado Camp Expedition

Postby jack_glendening on Sun Jan 17, 2016 6:03 am

Last Friday Gene Anderson and I used the newly cleared route to Launtz Creek Camp (though it is rough and missing a 0.1 mile section) to search for evidence of the "lost" Mt Manuel Trail between there and Vado Camp. We did not find any flagging or sawed/cut branches, but did find two rockwork structures, one old blaze, and several sections of obvious tread - but the latter covers only 1/4 of the total route. The Little Sur River was relatively low so we creek-walked from the first intersection of trail and river all the way to the camp, finding evidence of the two other places where the trail crosses the river. We placed orange-striped flagging to mark obvious tread, so it would be apparent from above or below, and on our return also placed pink-striped flagging when the best route between known tread seemed apparent - but did not flag when there was much uncertainty, notably at one particularly brushy (ceanothus) section which forced us to ascend to an open area well above where the route undoubtedly lay.

I hope to go back at some later time to better mark the route between the two camps and hopefully clear a route through that particularly brushy section. If you are interested in joining, let me know.

This was my first visit to Vado Camp and I found it _very_ attractive, more than other redwood-environment camps I'm familiar with. Hopefully someday I will be able to backpack and spend the night there.

Jack

BTW, the roughness of hiking off-trail on this steep terrain was demonstrated by it causing my 1 1/3 year old Keen boots to break, literally, on one hike - the band holding two lacing fittings broke so can no longer be used, as Keen says repair is not possible (photo at http://bigsurtrailmap.net/keen_durand_boot_failures.html). Am now using a old pair of Lowa Renegades which so far have not had any problems.
