Here's another nice one, although only the first few minutes are Big Sur related. That's jazz pianist Michel Petrucciani enjoying the sunset on Partington Ridge with saxophonist Charles Lloyd, who also happened to play the flute on the Beach Boys selection I posted earlier. Anyway, even though only the first few minutes are subject-line relevant, this is still a really nice, uplifting video with beautiful music. That little guy could really play the piano.

Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) and Jay Farrar (Son Volt) collaborated on the soundtrack to the documentary "One Fast Move or I'm Gone." It is about Jack Kerouac and the period of his life when he was writing the novel "Big Sur." Kerouac fought many demons while trying to escape his fame at Ferlinghetti's cabin in Bixby Canyon. Gibbard and Farrar adapted Kerouac's words to create the lyrics to the soundtrack.

Sittin' down with warm glow woodstove and kerosene
Peace you're lookin' for
Peace you'll find
In the tanglement cliff sides and crashin' down
Of Big Sur
Of Big Sur

Rapturous ring of silence, Pacific fury
Crashing on the rocks
Sea shroud towers
The innocence of health and stillness in the wild
Of Big Sur
Of Big Sur

This whole surface of the world
As we know it now
Will be covered with the silt of a billion years in time

I see as much as doors will allow
A long way from
The Beat Generation
Here comes the nightly mark to his nightly death
In Big Sur
In Big Sur

The best thing to do is not be false
Rocks of the valley
Have left no hall of complaints
I'm just a sick clown, and so is everybody else
In Big Sur
In Big Sur

How about this classic from the Beach Boys, including spoken word of Robinson Jeffers' poetry as well as occasional reference to things he wrote in the description of his first trip down the coast by horse-drawn wagon in 1914 with Corbet Grimes at the reins. Not much for video, but interesting and the music is sure pretty.

Obscure Big Sur Music Videos

Postby riatch on Thu Sep 16, 2010 1:47 pm

I heard this Johnny Rivers song on the radio recently. I knew of Johnny "Secret Agent Man" Rivers, but not of this insipid tune. I found this video on youtube. It is amazing to me that the creator of this video used many images to convey the essence of Big Sur ... few of which are remotely similar to the Big Sur wildlands.

I imagine there are a few other music videos out there related to Big Sur coast and the wild backcountry.
