I've also seen people with verizon get phone calls at Cook Springs, and there are turnouts on the cone peak road - south of vicente flat trailhead - past the first water there's a big turnout where I get access - and also at the end of cone peak road. I was unable to find a spot at china camp where I had cell access with a previous phone.
A previous poster wondered (facetiously of course) how we got along with out cell phones in the wilderness.
My response is that things may have been easier when some shithead didn't rip out your radiator at china camp and leave you with a 300 dollar tow bill and no way to communicate. Prior to cell phones, there were many camps and lookouts that had landlines for communications - would that be better?
