I've driven the South Coast Ridge Rd from the Nacimiento Ferguson Rd and it is fairly replete with spots for car camping, it is also generally in better condition than the Cone Peak Road (although the Cone Peak Road has by far the more spectacular camp sites[1]). You don't have to go far on the Cone Peak Road...less than a quarter mile in there is a flat camp (old helipad?) 100 yards up a badly rutted side road (turn right where the main road crosses a saddle)...or pull off at the saddle and camp on the left side of the road. If you do camp further up the Cone Peak Road, be aware that if any kind of wind/fog/weather comes up during the night, the scenic gaps will become less pleasant...some of the spots do have protection.
