Landslides are really not a big threat for hikers in Big Sur. Slides happen more often on Highway One because it is eroding into the ocean, and has been messed with by man, machines and non-native plants. Most of the trails we hike, and the entire Ventana Wilderness are inland from this. When fires burn though mud slides might happen but once the natural vegatation has grown back it's less likley. Pampas Grass (french broom) has been taking over the hills along highway one and causing a lot of slides by killing the natural vegation. You won't even know Highway 1 is there once you start hiking the Big Sur backcountry and have no need to worry.
