HWY 1 was built as part of the New Deal, responding to development interests in Monterey County. It IS a beautiful road, but it was not necessary, and it will always be subject to major landslides. This incredible coastline is subject to unnecessary development because of HWY 1.
The next time a major landslide closes HWY 1, I would just ask those tucked in, financially secure and politically liberal denizens of that area to decide if they want to spend State money on clearing all those tons of rocks/dirt or, instead, spend it on the education of the needy in this state. I know this is a loaded question, but it is interesting to see hypocrisy in action.
More seriously, the Big Sur coast should be allowed to regain its wildness by largely eliminating automobiles. THEN, trails should be maintained so that those who want to experience this sublime beauty can do it.
